About Kat- owner. baker. resident dishwasher.

There's Kat!
A warning to the those who might be careless enough to put something into the Universe and believe. It will happen! But allow me to add, you will work very hard! (Sometimes harder than you think humanly possible!)
As a small child I spent hours upon hours on top my grandmother's kitchen counter, rolling pie crust and mixing chocolate chip cookies. She was famed for her pecan pies and marshmallow cakes!
In my teens I found myself in cooking classes (accidentally, I must add!) I'd bake for family and friends. That grew into baking for friends of friends and co-workers.
In 2008, I applied for a vendors spot at a small farmers' market (that sadly, no longer exists) and my baked goods went public! I started creating a following within that neighborhood under the name Sweet Love Bakery. Does it sound familiar?
Groovy Guru Granola started up in Fall 2008 and we went to more farmers' markets. Over the next 3 years we went to 200+ farmers' markets, craft shows and local events... we were exhausted!
In 2011, I was working 3 jobs and still continuing my farmers' market schedule. Groovy Guru Granola celebrated it's 3rd year in business that October and as a friend advised me "go big or go home." I decided something had to change. I took a good look at my life and my business! I decided I'd give it one more year. After which I'd cut my losses and move East! That's when G-d laughed, some may say...
A couple of friends (thru the farmers' markets) were on the hunt for a building to house their growing business, so I said I'd help. I started looking. Along the way, they found a location without our help and we started the process of buying our building at 1551 N. Cotner Blvd.
It was the most exhausting, enlightening, frustrating and exciting year of my life! This "little" process of finding, buying, restoring, renovating, etc... took 15 months of labor, a few friends, lots of phone calls, a dozen permits, a city planning hearing and 3 city council meetings! It was a very long process and many folks came with me for the ride... who I will be forever grateful for! There isn't enough room on the whole of the Internet to express all the emotion, sweat and work involved in opening Gratitude. But you live once...
My deepest hope is that Gratitude is a place of community! A positive space for delicious food, good conversations and a few surprises. I choose to live my life in a state of gratitude and I hope Gratitude Cafe & Bakery is a reflection of my beliefs in community, sustainability, and Universal love.
It was a long road and a lot of work, but in February 2013 Gratitude Cafe & Bakery opened it's door to the public! Needless to say, I'm not moving East anytime soon!
